New Haven, Connecticut
New Haven, Connecticut was founded in 1638, when it was originally laid out in nine squares, or four streets by four streets. New Haven is best known as home of Yale University. It is also known for the National Historic Landmark, New Haven Green. Before the Europeans arrived, New Haven was the home of the Quinnipiac tribe, which lived off of fishing and farming. In 1638, it was then settled by 500 Puritans who had left Massachusetts Bay Colony to start a more theologically sound city. The town was set up on a theocratic government and its nine square grid. New Haven officially became a part of the Connecticut Colony in 1664. During and after the two World Wars, New Haven experienced a great growth spurt with its new inhabitants, mostly being African Americans and Puerto Ricans. New Haven is the birthplace of former President George W. Bush, when his father George H.W. Bush was a student at Yale.
New Haven is home to the Peabody Museum of Natural History, the Yale University Art Gallery and the New Haven Historical Society. For recreational fun, New Haven offers the Alling Memorial Golf Course, The Ingalls Rink for ice skating, East Rock and East Shore Parks for your trail hiking and fun. There are even tennis centers, and the Lighthouse Point Park & Carousel.
